American Lady

One Little Spot
In the butterfly world there are several “Ladies”.  The southern U.S. has two species, American Lady and Painted Lady. Both have very  colorful upper wings and can easily be confused.  The image above was taken in my backyard on 4Apr12.  The partially opened wings show bright orange.  Look closely on the left upper wing in the orange area and you’ll see a tiny white spot surrounded by orange.  This little spot confirms that this is an American Lady and not a Painted Lady.
